It started as another bleak day when we all met at the old toll gates site at Berowra, however it was not bad enough to deter the intrepid group. We motored up the Pacific Highway to Maitland where we joined our brothers from the Hunter Jaguar Drivers Club. It was a general, all round country fair. Yes there were the steam trains, and there were markets (just the mention of that word is enough to excite Rae and Leigh) and of course there were the cars.
It was an unusual mix; a few like us, the classic brigade, then there were the American car groups, and of course the Holden and Ford boys. Finally, the custom brigade. Boy do some of these guys put a lot of money and effort into their cars! There was something for everyone, including lots of Dooff Dooff noise coming from the million dollar sound systems in some of the custom cars.
While sitting around in a group a lot of people looked at the cars, many oohing and aahing. One fellow, with young son in tow, was looking at the engine of one Jag and, trying to show junior just how much he knew, was heard to say You can bet its all souped up. After they had walked away it was obvious that the couple who owned the Jag were amused by the statement, especially the wife who turned to her husband and said, So thats what you spend all that time in the garage doing; souping? Dont I feed you enough that you have to sneak away and make soup? At least you could share it. (Editors note: Maybe we could add a cooking column to the magazine and each member could send in their own special recipes.)
To cap the day off Rick Learmonth and Margaret Giddy received first place in the S-Type for the Best European Car category in the Steamfests ShownShine Day. Laurie and Rae Arthur in their E-Type received the Runner Up award, not bad since neither of them knew they were in a competition nor that there were awards to be made! With it being the last day of the school holidays most of us left in the early afternoon to avoid both the traffic and the many boys in blue that were out for their Sunday Drive.
